This guide shows you how to download, install and activate Windows 11 Home on a new PC, a new SSD or an existing computer you want to reset. A clean install takes 20–40 minutes, and each step below has a screenshot. If you need a licence, get a genuine Windows 11 Home product key with instant email delivery.
Before You Start: Requirements
Check that your PC meets Microsoft's Windows 11 system requirements:
- 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster with 2 or more cores, on Microsoft's supported CPU list
- 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver
You'll also need a USB flash drive of 8 GB or more, your 25-character product key, a backup of your files, and an internet connection with a Microsoft account: Windows 11 Home asks you to sign in during setup.
Not sure whether Home is enough? Our Windows 11 Home vs Pro comparison explains the differences, such as BitLocker, Remote Desktop and Hyper-V, which are Pro only.
Step 1: Create a Bootable USB Drive
- Go to Microsoft's Windows 11 download page and download the Media Creation Tool.
- Run it, accept the licence terms and choose your language. The Windows 11 image covers Home and Pro.
- Select USB flash drive, pick your drive and let the tool finish. Everything on the USB drive is erased.

Step 2: Boot From USB and Install
- Plug the USB drive into the target PC and restart. Open the boot menu (usually F12, F11, Esc or F8) and choose the USB drive.
- Choose your language and keyboard, then click Next and Install.
- When asked to activate Windows, enter your Windows 11 Home product key. Setup then picks the Home edition automatically. If you choose I don't have a product key, select Windows 11 Home from the edition list instead.
- Choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced), select the target drive and click Next. Deleting the old partitions gives you a truly clean install.
- Windows copies files and restarts a few times. Then complete the setup screens: region, keyboard, network and Microsoft account.

Step 3: Activate and Confirm
Windows 11 Home activates online automatically once the PC is connected to the internet. To check, go to Settings → System → Activation. If you skipped the key during setup, click Change product key next to it and enter your key there.

The Activation page should say "Windows is activated with a digital license" or "…with a product key". Signing in with a Microsoft account links the licence to your account, which makes reactivation easier after a hardware change.
Upgrading From Home to Pro Later
If you later need Pro features, you don't have to reinstall. A Windows 11 Home to Pro upgrade key changes the edition in place under Settings → System → Activation, keeping your files and apps. Our Windows 11 Pro guide covers the upgrade step by step.
Troubleshooting Common Activation Errors
| Error | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC004F050 | The key doesn't match the installed edition | You installed Pro instead of Home. Reinstall and choose Windows 11 Home, or use a Pro key. |
| 0xC004C008 | The key has reached its activation limit | Contact us for a replacement key. |
| 0xC004F213 | No licence found after a hardware change | Run the Activation troubleshooter in Settings → System → Activation and sign in with your Microsoft account. |
| 0x80072F8F | Windows can't reach the activation server | Check the date, time and internet connection, then click Troubleshoot. |
| "This PC doesn't meet the requirements" | TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot is turned off | Enable TPM (fTPM or PTT) and Secure Boot in your PC's UEFI settings. |
