How to Download, Install and Activate Windows Server 2022 Datacenter

This guide walks you through downloading, installing and activating Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, the edition with unlimited virtual machines, Storage Spaces Direct and software-defined networking. It includes the evaluation-to-retail conversion step that trips up most admins. You'll need a Windows Server 2022 Datacenter product key.

Support note: Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on October 13, 2026 and receives security updates until October 14, 2031. For new hosts, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is supported until 2034.

Requirements

• 64-bit processor at 1.4 GHz, with NX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF and PrefetchW support; SLAT for Hyper-V
• 512 MB RAM for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience (far more for Hyper-V hosts)
• 32 GB of disk space (more for Desktop Experience and updates)
• UEFI with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 recommended
• Licensing: every physical core, with a 16-core minimum per server

Step 1: Download the ISO

Download the Windows Server 2022 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center. Register, choose ISO download and your language. The image contains Standard and Datacenter in both Server Core and Desktop Experience variants.

Step 2: Install Windows Server

1. Write the ISO to a USB drive (8 GB+) with a tool such as Rufus, or attach it to a virtual machine.
2. Boot from it and choose your language, then Install now.
3. Select Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Evaluation (Desktop Experience) for a graphical interface, or the non-Desktop option for Server Core.
4. Choose Custom, select the target disk and let setup complete. Set the Administrator password when prompted.

Step 3: Convert the Evaluation Edition

An evaluation install won't accept a retail key directly, so you must convert it first. Open Command Prompt as Administrator:

1. Check the current edition: DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
2. List possible targets: DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions
3. Convert and apply your key: DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula
4. Restart when prompted. The server may restart twice.

Important: DISM can't convert a server that is already a domain controller. Convert first and promote afterwards, or demote it before converting.

Step 4: Activate Windows Server

After the conversion, Windows usually activates automatically. If not, run:

1. slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX to install the key
2. slmgr /ato to activate online
3. slmgr /dlv to confirm the licence status shows "Licensed"

Activation is online, so make sure the server is connected to the internet.

Step 5: Enable Hyper-V (Optional)

Datacenter's main benefit is unlimited Windows Server VMs. To add the Hyper-V role, run this in PowerShell as administrator:

Install-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V -IncludeManagementTools -Restart
