This guide shows you how to download, install and activate Windows 10 Pro, either with a clean installation from Microsoft's official media or by upgrading an existing Windows 10 Home PC. Both take about 15–30 minutes, and each step has a screenshot. If you need a licence, get a genuine Windows 10 Pro product key with instant email delivery.
Support note: Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 Pro still installs and activates normally, but it no longer receives regular free security updates. If your PC meets the requirements, Windows 11 Pro is the better choice for a new installation.
Before You Start
- Your 25-character Windows 10 Pro product key
- A USB flash drive of at least 8 GB (clean install only)
- At least 20 GB of free disk space (32 GB for 64-bit)
- An internet connection for online activation
- A backup of your files
Option 1: Clean Install of Windows 10 Pro
Use this method for a new PC or drive, or to replace an older Windows version with a fresh system.
Step 1: Create installation media
- Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's Windows 10 download page. Always download from Microsoft, never from a third-party mirror.
- Run it and choose Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.
- Pick your language, the Windows 10 edition (it covers Home and Pro) and the 64-bit architecture.
- Select USB flash drive and let the tool finish. Everything on the USB drive is erased.

Step 2: Boot from USB and install
- Plug the USB drive into the target PC, restart, and open the boot menu (usually F12, F11, Esc or F8). Choose the USB drive.
- Select your language, time and keyboard settings, then click Install now.
- Enter the product key from your order email. Setup then installs Windows 10 Pro automatically. If you choose I don't have a product key, select Windows 10 Pro from the edition list.
- Choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced), delete the old partitions on the target drive, select the unallocated space and click Next.
- Windows copies files and restarts a few times. Then complete the setup screens.
Warning: a custom install erases everything on the target drive. Back up your files before you begin.

Step 3: Confirm activation
Go to Settings → Update & Security → Activation. It should say "Windows is activated with a digital license" or "…with a product key". If you skipped the key during setup, click Change product key and enter it there.

Option 2: Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro
If your PC already runs activated Windows 10 Home, you can switch to Pro in place. Your files and apps stay where they are. A dedicated Windows 10 Home to Pro upgrade key or a full Pro key both work.
- Save your work and close all apps.
- Open Settings → Update & Security → Activation and click Change product key. Click Yes if User Account Control asks.
- Enter your Windows 10 Pro key and click Next, then Start to begin the upgrade.
- The PC installs the Pro features and restarts once or twice, usually in 5–10 minutes.
- Check the Activation page: it should now show Windows 10 Pro as activated.
If your Pro key is rejected during the upgrade
Windows sometimes won't accept a retail Pro key directly on Home. Microsoft publishes a generic Pro key, VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T, which switches the edition to Pro but does not activate it. Enter the generic key under Change product key, let the PC restart as Windows 10 Pro, then enter your own key the same way to activate.
Troubleshooting Common Activation Errors
| Error | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 0x803FA067 | Windows can't upgrade your edition | Check the edition under Settings → System → About. A Pro key can't activate Enterprise or N editions. Use the generic-key method above. |
| 0xC004C003 | The key was rejected by the activation server | Check for typos first. If the key is correct, contact us with your order number. |
| 0xC004C008 | The key has reached its activation limit | Contact us for a replacement key. |
| 0x800F0805 | System files are missing after the edition switch | Free up 20 GB of disk space and install all updates. If it persists, do a clean install (Option 1). |
| Not activated after a hardware change | The licence is tied to the old hardware | Run the Activation troubleshooter and choose "I changed hardware on this device recently". OEM keys can't move to a new motherboard. |
