This guide explains how to download, install and activate Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, including the evaluation-to-retail conversion that most activation problems come from. It takes 30–45 minutes from ISO download to an activated server. You'll need a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter product key.
Support note: Windows Server 2016 receives security updates only until January 12, 2027. It suits labs, legacy applications and short-term needs. For production servers, Windows Server 2025 is supported until 2034.
Requirements
- 64-bit processor at 1.4 GHz or faster, with NX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF and PrefetchW support
- 512 MB RAM for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience
- 32 GB of free disk space, or more for Desktop Experience and updates
- Licensing: every physical core, with a 16-core minimum per server; CALs for connecting users or devices
Step 1: Download the ISO
Download the Windows Server 2016 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center. The image includes Standard and Datacenter editions, each with Server Core and Desktop Experience options.
Step 2: Install Windows Server 2016
- Write the ISO to a USB drive (8 GB+) or attach it to a virtual machine.
- Boot from it, choose your language, and click Install now.
- Select Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Evaluation (Desktop Experience) for a graphical interface, or the Server Core option for a minimal install.
- Choose Custom, select the disk, and complete setup. Set the Administrator password when prompted.
Step 3: Convert the Evaluation to Datacenter
Retail keys won't activate an evaluation build directly. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
-
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEditionto confirm you're on an evaluation edition DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula- Restart when prompted.
Important: this conversion doesn't work on a domain controller. Convert before promoting the server, or demote it first.
Step 4: Activate
-
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXinstalls the key, if it wasn't applied by DISM. -
slmgr /atoactivates online. -
slmgr /dlvconfirms the licence status is "Licensed".
Activation is online, so make sure the server is connected to the internet.
