Windows Server 2022 Standard Features

• Secured-core server — hardware root of trust, firmware protection and virtualisation-based security on supported hardware.
• TLS 1.3 on by default and a built-in DNS-over-HTTPS client.
• SMB AES-256 encryption and SMB compression for faster, safer file transfers.
• Hyper-V improvements, including nested virtualisation on AMD processors.
• Azure hybrid tools — Azure Arc, Azure Backup and Storage Migration Service through Windows Admin Center.

When Is Server 2022 Standard the Right Choice?

• Matching existing infrastructure — your other servers already run 2022, and you want identical builds, drivers and group policies.
• Application certification — your vendor certifies its software on Server 2022 but not yet on 2025.
• Physical or lightly virtualised workloads needing no more than two VMs per host.

Running many VMs? Windows Server 2022 Datacenter includes unlimited VMs, Storage Spaces Direct and SDN.

Support status: Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on October 13, 2026 and then receives security updates until October 14, 2031, according to Microsoft's lifecycle page. For new deployments that need the longest runway, consider Windows Server 2025.

How to Install and Activate

1. Download the Windows Server 2022 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center and install the Desktop Experience or Server Core option.
2. Evaluation installs must be converted before a retail key will activate. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run: DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula, then restart when prompted.
3. If the server is already a full (non-evaluation) installation, enter the key under Settings → System → Activation or run slmgr /ipk followed by slmgr /ato.
4. Activation is online, so make sure the server is connected to the internet.

Do You Need Client Access Licences?

Yes. The server licence lets you run Windows Server; every user or device that connects to it also needs a Windows Server CAL. Remote Desktop users additionally need RDS CALs, such as our Windows Server 2022 RDS Device CALs.
