Windows Server 2022 Standard is Microsoft's server operating system for businesses that need advanced security, hybrid Azure integration and a platform for on-premises workloads. Installing it looks daunting if you have limited IT experience, but the process is straightforward once broken into steps. This guide takes you from download through to activation.
What you will need
- A genuine Windows Server 2022 Standard product key
- A USB flash drive of at least 8 GB, formatted as FAT32
- A server meeting the minimum requirements: 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, 2 GB RAM (512 MB for Server Core), 32 GB disk space
- Administrator access to the target machine
Step 1 — Download the Windows Server 2022 ISO
Your order email contains a link to Microsoft's download page alongside your product key. If you no longer have it, download the ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center.
Scroll to the Get started for free heading and select Download the ISO, then follow the prompts. The evaluation ISO and the licensed ISO are the same file — your product key is what converts it to a full licence.
Step 2 — Prepare your USB drive
The ISO contains everything needed to install the operating system, but you must transfer it to bootable media first. A USB flash drive is the simplest option. It needs to be at least 8 GB and formatted as FAT32.
Check the current format
- Plug the drive into a Windows PC and open File Explorer
- Find the drive under This PC and right-click it
- Select Properties
- On the General tab, check the File System entry
Most flash drives ship formatted as FAT32. If yours already is, skip to the next section.
Format the drive as FAT32
Warning: Formatting erases everything on the drive. Check for important files before you continue.
- Right-click the drive in File Explorer and select Format
- Choose FAT32 (Default) from the File System menu and tick Quick Format
- Click Start. This takes only a few seconds
Once formatted, copy the ISO file you downloaded in Step 1 onto the drive.
Step 3 — Install Windows Server 2022
Insert the prepared USB drive into the target server and power it on. If the server has no operating system installed, it should boot from the USB drive automatically — follow the installation wizard from there.
Changing the boot order
If the server does not boot from USB, you will need to change the boot order in the BIOS. The exact keys vary between manufacturers, but the process below is representative for an Intel server board:
- With the server powered off, insert your prepared USB drive
- Power on and press F2 to enter the BIOS
- Navigate to Boot Maintenance Manager and select Change Boot Order
- Use the arrow keys to move your USB drive to the top of the list
- Press Enter to confirm your selection
- Press F10 to save and reboot
On Dell servers press F2 for setup or F11 for the boot menu; on HPE ProLiant press F9 for setup or F11 for the boot menu. The installation wizard should start once the server boots from USB.
Step 4 — Activate Windows Server 2022
With installation complete, activate the operating system using your product key:
- Type CMD into the search bar to find the Command Prompt app
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator
- Enter the following command, replacing the Xs with your product key:
Dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /AcceptEula /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
The server will restart to complete the edition change. To confirm activation afterwards, run slmgr /xpr from an elevated Command Prompt.
Troubleshooting
Error 0xC004F050 — invalid product key
Check for transcription errors first. Also confirm the key matches your edition: a Standard key will not activate a Datacenter installation.
The DISM command reports the current edition cannot be upgraded
This appears when the installed edition already matches the target, or when you are running an evaluation build that has expired. Run DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition to check which edition is active.
Activation fails behind a corporate firewall
Activation needs outbound HTTPS access to Microsoft's activation servers. Make sure your firewall allows this connection before you activate.
