Windows 11 Home vs Pro comes down to one question: do you need business-grade security and management tools? Windows 11 Home covers everything most people do on a PC, including browsing, Office work, streaming and gaming. Windows 11 Pro includes all of that and adds BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V virtual machines, Group Policy and work-account management. If you work remotely, handle sensitive files, or manage more than one PC, Pro is worth it. If you don't, Home is enough.

What Does Windows 11 Pro Have That Home Doesn't?
Windows 11 Pro adds features in three areas: stronger data protection, remote access and virtualisation, and central management. None of them change how fast your PC runs. They change what you can do with it and how well your data is protected if a laptop is lost or stolen.
BitLocker encryption
BitLocker encrypts your entire drive and lets you choose how it's unlocked. BitLocker To Go also encrypts USB drives. Home only offers device encryption, a simpler version that works on supported hardware and gives you fewer controls.
This matters most for laptops. Without encryption, anyone who removes the SSD from a stolen laptop can read your files, even if they can't sign in to Windows.
Remote Desktop hosting
Both editions can connect to another PC with the Remote Desktop app. Only Pro lets other people or devices connect into your PC. If you want to reach your office PC from home, or support a family member's computer, the PC you're connecting to needs Pro.
Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox
Hyper-V runs full virtual machines, such as a Linux test server or an older Windows version, inside your PC. Windows Sandbox opens a disposable, isolated desktop where you can test a suspicious download. Everything inside it is deleted when you close the window.
Developers, IT staff and security-conscious users use these daily. Most home users never need them.
Group Policy and business management
Pro includes the Group Policy Editor, domain join, Microsoft Entra ID join and Windows Update for Business. Together they let a business control settings, enforce security rules and schedule updates across many PCs. Kiosk mode (Assigned Access) locks a PC to a single app, for example a reception check-in screen.
Is Windows 11 Pro Better for Gaming?
No. Windows 11 Home and Pro deliver the same gaming performance because they share the same graphics stack, including DirectX 12 Ultimate, Auto HDR and DirectStorage. Pro doesn't add frames per second or reduce latency. Choose Pro for gaming only if you also want BitLocker, Remote Desktop or virtual machines on that PC.
The one hardware exception is extreme workstations. Home supports up to 128 GB of RAM and one CPU socket. Pro supports up to 2 TB of RAM and two sockets. Very few gaming PCs come close to those limits.
Which Edition Should You Choose?
Choose by how you use the PC, not by which edition sounds more powerful.
Choose Windows 11 Home if you:
- Use your PC for browsing, streaming, school work, Office apps or gaming
- Have a desktop that rarely leaves the house
- Don't need anyone to connect to your PC remotely

Choose Windows 11 Pro if you:
- Work from home or run a small business
- Carry a laptop with client, financial or personal files on it
- Want to access your PC remotely or run virtual machines
- Manage several PCs, or need to join a company network
A genuine Windows 11 Pro product key covers all of these. For an office or household with several computers, the Windows 11 Pro 3-PC licence works out cheaper per device.
The price factor
Microsoft charges noticeably more for Pro than for Home. At our store, both editions are currently the same price, $49.99. When the price is equal, Pro is the safer choice: you get every Home feature plus the extras, and you won't need to upgrade later.
Can You Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro?
Yes. You can upgrade an activated Windows 11 Home PC to Pro in about 10 minutes without reinstalling Windows or losing files. Open Settings → System → Activation, select Change product key, enter a Pro key, and let Windows restart. A Windows 11 Home to Pro upgrade key or a full Pro key both work.
Going the other way is harder. There's no direct downgrade from Pro to Home, so moving back requires a clean install. That's another reason to start with Pro if you're unsure.
If the key is rejected during the upgrade, our Windows 11 Pro install and activation guide explains the generic-key workaround and the most common activation error codes.
A Common Mistake We See
Many customers buy a Pro key for a PC that is still running Home, then enter it during a clean install that was set up for the Home edition. The result is an "edition mismatch" error, even though the key itself is valid.
The fix is simple. Either enter the Pro key at the start of setup, so Windows installs Pro automatically, or use the in-place upgrade from Settings described above. Every key we sell is covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee and lifetime replacement warranty, and our support team can help you through activation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between Windows 11 Home and Pro?
Windows 11 Pro includes everything in Home and adds BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Group Policy and domain or Entra ID join. Home is built for personal use; Pro is built for work, remote access and managing multiple PCs.
Is Windows 11 Pro faster than Home?
No. Both editions use the same core system and perform the same in everyday tasks and games. Pro only supports more RAM (2 TB vs 128 GB) and more CPU sockets, which matters for high-end workstations, not typical PCs.
Is Windows 11 Home enough for gaming?
Yes. Windows 11 Home includes every gaming feature in Windows 11, such as DirectX 12 Ultimate, Auto HDR, DirectStorage and Xbox Game Bar. Pro adds nothing for gaming performance.
Can I use a Windows 10 Pro key for Windows 11 Pro?
Generally yes, on hardware that meets Windows 11 requirements. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 11 Pro keys are interchangeable for activation, as are Home keys between the two versions.
Will upgrading from Home to Pro delete my files?
No. The upgrade changes the edition in place and keeps your files, apps and settings. Backing up important files first is still a good habit.
Do Windows 11 Home and Pro get the same updates?
Yes. Both receive the same monthly security updates and annual feature updates. Pro adds Windows Update for Business, which lets you delay or schedule updates instead of installing them right away.
Conclusion
For everyday use and gaming, Windows 11 Home is all you need. For remote work, laptops with sensitive data, virtual machines or managing several PCs, Windows 11 Pro is the right edition. When both cost the same, Pro gives you room to grow. If you also need Office, see our Windows 11 Pro + Office 2021 Pro Plus bundle.
