1. Download the Windows Server 2025 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center and install the Desktop Experience or Server Core option.
2. Evaluation installs must be converted before a retail key will activate. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run: DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula, then restart when prompted.
3. If the server is already a full (non-evaluation) installation, enter the key under Settings → System → Activation or run slmgr /ipk followed by slmgr /ato.
4. Activation is online, so make sure the server is connected to the internet.

Tip: an evaluation edition that has already been promoted to a domain controller can't be converted with DISM. Convert first, then promote, or demote it before converting.

Common Activation Errors and Fixes

• 0xC004F069 or "edition mismatch" — the installed edition isn't Datacenter. Use the DISM conversion above.
• "This edition cannot be upgraded" — you're on an evaluation build that's already a domain controller. Demote, convert, then promote again.
• 0xC004C008 or "key already in use" — the activation limit was reached, often after a hardware change. Contact us for a replacement key.
