Windows 11 25H2 is the 2025 annual feature update for Windows 11, released on 30 September 2025 as build 26200. It shares its core with 24H2 and arrived on most PCs as a small enablement package with a single restart. Home and Pro editions are supported until 12 October 2027, so 25H2 is still a safe version to run today.
What Is Windows 11 25H2?
25H2 is a "scoped" feature update: it adds a modest set of changes on top of the same platform as 24H2 rather than replacing Windows wholesale. The name follows Microsoft's pattern of year plus half: 25 for 2025, H2 for the second half.
Because 24H2 and 25H2 use an identical set of system files, Microsoft shipped the 25H2 features to 24H2 PCs in advance inside monthly updates, switched off. The KB5054156 enablement package is the "master switch" that turns them on. The practical effect is a fast update with one restart instead of a full reinstall that can take an hour.

What Changed in 25H2?
Very little on the surface. Most new Windows 11 features now arrive through monthly updates to both 24H2 and 25H2, because the two versions share a servicing branch. What 25H2 itself brought was mainly housekeeping.
-
Legacy tools removed: PowerShell 2.0 and the WMIC command-line utility were removed. WMI itself still works; scripts that call
wmicneed rewriting in PowerShell. - Store app removal for IT: on Enterprise and Education devices, administrators can remove selected preinstalled Microsoft Store apps through Group Policy or MDM.
- A fresh support clock: installing 25H2 resets the servicing period, which is the main reason to move to it.
That last point is the real story. Each annual version gets 24 months of updates on Home and Pro, and 36 months on Enterprise and Education. Moving to a newer version is how you keep receiving security fixes.
How Do You Update to Windows 11 25H2?
On a 24H2 PC, 25H2 comes through Windows Update as a normal feature update. Because Windows 11 26H2 was released on 29 September 2026 for the same platform, Windows Update may now offer 26H2 instead. Either keeps you supported, and both install as a quick enablement package.
- Back up important files to an external drive or OneDrive.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and install all pending cumulative updates first.
- Select Check for updates. If a feature update is offered, select Download and install.
- Restart when prompted.
- Confirm the result in Settings → System → About under Windows specifications, or run
winver.
If nothing is offered, your PC may be under a safeguard hold, where Microsoft pauses the update on hardware or software with a known compatibility problem. Waiting is usually the right choice. Forcing the update with an ISO bypasses the hold and can surface the very issue it was protecting you from.
Can You Update from 23H2 to 25H2?
Yes, but not with the small enablement package. 23H2 is built on an older platform, so moving to 25H2 (or 26H2) is a full feature update that downloads several gigabytes and takes longer. Home and Pro servicing for 23H2 has already ended, so these PCs should update soon.
You can do it through Windows Update or with Microsoft's installation tools. Our comparison of the Update Assistant, Installation Assistant and ISO explains which suits your situation. If you are coming from Windows 10, check the Windows 11 requirements checklist first; TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are the two most common blockers, and the cause is usually a firmware setting rather than missing hardware.
Does 25H2 Support Hotpatch Updates?
Yes, but only for organisations. Hotpatch installs some monthly security updates without a restart, and it is available on Windows 11 24H2 and later, including 25H2. Microsoft's hotpatch requirements include an Enterprise E3/E5, Education A3/A5, Microsoft 365 Business Premium or similar licence, management through Windows Autopatch, and Virtualization-based Security turned on.
The caution is about expectations. Restarts don't disappear: January, April, July and October are "baseline" months that still require one. Home and Pro PCs bought with a standard licence don't get hotpatch at all and receive normal cumulative updates.
What Should You Do If Something Breaks After 25H2?
Most problems after a feature update come from third-party tools that hook deep into Windows: shell customisers that restyle Explorer and the Start menu, older motherboard utility suites, and outdated drivers. Updating Windows changes the components those tools patch, so they can crash or stop loading.
- Update or uninstall the tool, checking the developer's site for a version that supports your build.
- Install the latest chipset, graphics and motherboard drivers from the manufacturer.
- If the problem started straight after an update, check Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates, or Settings → System → Recovery for a Go back option if one is shown.
- For deeper corruption, consider a reset; our guide to clean install vs reset explains the difference.
Updating doesn't affect your licence: Windows stays activated across feature updates because the edition and digital licence don't change.
A Common Mistake We See
People sometimes hold back feature updates for years to avoid change, then discover their version has quietly reached end of servicing and stopped receiving security fixes. That is exactly what happened to many 24H2 Home and Pro PCs on 13 October 2026.
Since 25H2 and 26H2 install in minutes from 24H2, the downtime argument has largely gone. Check your version under Settings → System → About once a year. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows 11 25H2 stable enough to install?
Yes. 25H2 has been generally available since 30 September 2025 and has received a year of monthly fixes. It shares its core with 24H2, so driver and app compatibility is very similar. If Windows Update holds it back on your PC, wait for the safeguard hold to be lifted.
How long is Windows 11 25H2 supported?
Windows 11 Home, Pro and Pro for Workstations on 25H2 receive security updates until 12 October 2027. Enterprise and Education editions are supported until 10 October 2028. After that, you need to move to a newer version such as 26H2 to keep getting fixes.
What build number is Windows 11 25H2?
Windows 11 25H2 uses build 26200, followed by a revision number that rises with each monthly update. 24H2 uses 26100 and 26H2 uses 26300. Run winver or open Settings → System → About to see your exact build.
Should I install 25H2 or wait for 26H2?
26H2 is already out, released on 29 September 2026, and installs the same quick way from 24H2 or 25H2. If Windows Update offers 26H2, taking it gives the longest support window. Staying on 25H2 is fine until October 2027.
Do I need a new product key for 25H2?
No. Feature updates keep your existing activation, edition and digital licence. You only need a key for a fresh installation on a PC that has never been activated, after a major hardware change on a retail licence, or when moving from Home to Pro.
Did 25H2 change the hardware requirements?
No. 25H2 uses the same requirements as 24H2: a supported 64-bit processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot. PCs that already run 24H2 meet them.
Conclusion
Windows 11 25H2 is a light, quick update over 24H2 whose main value is a fresh support window to October 2027 for Home and Pro. If Windows Update now offers 26H2, that is the better long-term choice. For new builds or edition upgrades, browse our genuine Windows 11 product keys.
