The 24H2 vs 25H2 question has a short answer as of November 2026: update to 25H2. The two versions share the same code base, and 25H2 adds little that most people will notice. But support for 24H2 Home and Pro ended on 13 October 2026, while 25H2 Home and Pro are supported until 12 October 2027. The update is free, keeps your files and apps, and needs only a single restart.
Windows 11 24H2 vs 25H2 at a Glance
The main difference between 24H2 and 25H2 is support, not features. Both run on the same platform. 25H2 is 24H2 with a small "switch" turned on, a couple of legacy tools removed and a fresh 24-month support window for Home and Pro.

What's New in 25H2 Compared With 24H2?
Very little is new for home users, because 25H2 and 24H2 share the same servicing branch. A servicing branch is the stream of monthly updates Microsoft builds from one code base. Microsoft's what's new in 25H2 page says it includes every feature and fix already delivered to 24H2 through cumulative updates. Both versions even receive the same monthly patch.
The real changes are small and mostly aimed at IT teams:
- PowerShell 2.0 removed — the old engine is gone. Modern PowerShell remains, so only very old scripts that call version 2.0 are affected.
- WMIC removed — the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line tool is uninstalled during the update. Scripts that use it should move to PowerShell commands.
- Removing preinstalled apps by policy — Enterprise and Education admins can remove selected Microsoft Store apps through policy so they stop reappearing. Home and Pro do not get this policy.
- Features switched on by default — some features that shipped turned off by default in 24H2 are enabled by default in 25H2.
Our full guide to Windows 11 25H2 covers each change in more detail, so this post stays focused on the comparison.
Is Windows 11 24H2 Still Supported?
No, not for Home and Pro. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reached end of servicing on 13 October 2026. Those PCs no longer receive monthly security updates, preview updates or fixes for known issues. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 continue to be serviced until 12 October 2027.
End of servicing is different from Windows 11 itself ending. Windows 11 keeps receiving updates. Each yearly version, though, only gets them for a fixed period: 24 months for Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Moving to a newer version restarts the clock, and you do not need a new licence or product key to do it.
Why Is Microsoft Force-Updating Unmanaged 24H2 PCs to 25H2?
Microsoft is moving 24H2 Home and Pro PCs to 25H2 automatically so they keep receiving security updates. In early April 2026, Microsoft said on its Windows release health dashboard that the rollout had expanded to all 24H2 Home and Pro devices not managed by an IT department.
"Unmanaged" here means a PC that is not controlled through tools such as Intune, Windows Update policies or WSUS, which covers most home and small-office machines. The update downloads when Microsoft judges your device is ready. You can choose when to restart or pause updates for a while, but once the pause runs out, the update installs. On managed business PCs, the IT team decides the timing instead.
How Do You Update From 24H2 to 25H2?
On most PCs you update through Windows Update, and the enablement package installs like a monthly update. Microsoft calls the enablement package a "master switch": the 25H2 files are already on an up-to-date 24H2 PC and simply sit inactive until the package turns them on.
- Back up important files. The update keeps your data, but a backup is a good habit before any version change.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any pending monthly updates first.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available if you want the offer sooner.
- When Windows 11, version 25H2 appears, select Download & install.
- Restart when prompted. One restart completes the change.
- Press Windows key + R, type
winverand press Enter to confirm you are on version 25H2, build 26200.
If Windows Update does not offer 25H2, Microsoft may be holding it back because of a known driver or app issue on your hardware. The installation assistant or an ISO also work; our comparison of the Update Assistant, Installation Assistant and ISO explains which to use.
How Does 23H2 Compare With 24H2 and 25H2?
Windows 11 23H2 is a generation older and should be updated. It uses build 22631 on an older platform, and Home and Pro support ended on 11 November 2025. Enterprise and Education editions of 23H2 reach end of servicing on 10 November 2026.
Because 23H2 does not share the 24H2 code base, it cannot use the quick enablement package. A 23H2 PC needs a full feature update, which takes longer, reinstalls the operating system in place and usually keeps files and apps. Check the Windows 11 requirements first if the PC is older, especially if Windows 11 was originally installed on hardware that does not meet them.
Should You Skip 25H2 and Go Straight to 26H2?
You can, if Windows Update offers it. Windows 11 26H2 (build 26300) was released on 29 September 2026, and Home and Pro are supported until 10 October 2028. It sits on the same platform and hardware requirements as 25H2, so for most users it is a support-window extension rather than a feature leap.
Microsoft rolls new versions out in stages, so 26H2 may not reach every PC straight away. Moving to 25H2 now is the safe, immediate fix for an unsupported 24H2 PC. Taking 26H2 when it is offered gives you the longest runway. Windows 11 26H1 is a separate case: it only ships on selected new Arm devices and is not offered to existing PCs. Our 25H2 vs 26H1 comparison explains that split.
A Common Mistake We See
People sometimes assume a new Windows 11 version needs a new licence, or that installing it will undo activation. Neither is true. Version updates are free for any activated Windows 11 PC, and the edition and activation carry across. If Windows shows as not activated after an update, the cause is usually something else, such as an edition change during a reinstall. That is worth fixing before you buy anything.
The second mistake is ignoring the update on a work PC that runs older scripts or tools. If you still rely on WMIC commands or PowerShell 2.0 scripts, test them on 25H2 first and update them to modern PowerShell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 25H2 better than 24H2?
For support, yes. Features are almost identical because both share the same code base. The difference is that 24H2 Home and Pro stopped receiving updates on 13 October 2026, while 25H2 is supported until 12 October 2027. That makes 25H2 the version to run on any Home or Pro PC.
Does 25H2 slow down my PC compared with 24H2?
There is no reason it should. 25H2 is the same platform with extra features switched on and two legacy tools removed. Performance in everyday use and games is essentially the same. If a PC feels slower after updating, check for driver updates and background apps rather than blaming the version.
Can I stay on 24H2 and refuse 25H2?
On an unmanaged Home or Pro PC you can only delay it. You can pause updates or choose when to restart, but once a pause expires the update installs. Staying on 24H2 would also mean no security fixes, since its Home and Pro servicing has already ended.
Will updating from 24H2 to 25H2 delete my files or apps?
No. The enablement package changes the version in place and keeps your files, apps and settings. It installs like a monthly update and needs one restart. Backing up first is still sensible, especially on a work PC.
Do I need a new product key for Windows 11 25H2?
No. Any activated copy of Windows 11 Home or Pro can update to 25H2 for free, and the edition and activation stay the same. You only need a key if Windows was never activated, or if you are moving to a different edition such as Home to Pro.
What is the difference between Windows 11 23H2 vs 24H2?
24H2 moved Windows 11 to a newer platform (build 26100) than 23H2 (build 22631). Because of that, 23H2 cannot take the quick enablement package and needs a full feature update. 23H2 Home and Pro support ended on 11 November 2025, so those PCs should move to 25H2 or later.
Conclusion
In the 24H2 vs 25H2 comparison, features are close to identical, but support decides it: 24H2 Home and Pro are no longer serviced, and 25H2 runs until October 2027. Update through Windows Update and keep your licence as it is.
