This guide shows you how to download, install and activate Windows Server 2016 Essentials, the small-business edition for up to 25 users and 50 devices with no CALs required. It includes the Essentials dashboard, client PC backup and Remote Web Access. You'll need a Windows Server 2016 Essentials product key.
Support note: Windows Server 2016 receives security updates only until January 12, 2027. It suits labs, legacy applications and short-term needs. For production servers, Windows Server 2025 is supported until 2034.
Requirements
- 64-bit processor at 1.4 GHz or faster (up to 2 processors)
- 2 GB RAM minimum; 16 GB recommended for a file and backup server
- 160 GB of disk space
- A network connection and a static IP address for the server
Step 1: Get the Installation Media
Use the download link in your order email, or the Windows Server 2016 Essentials ISO from Microsoft's Evaluation Center if it's available in your region. Write the ISO to a USB drive or attach it to a virtual machine.
Step 2: Install
- Boot from the installation media and click Install now.
- Enter your product key when prompted. This installs the full, non-evaluation edition.
- Choose Custom, select the target disk and complete setup.
Step 3: Run the Essentials Configuration Wizard
After the first sign-in, the Configure Windows Server Essentials wizard starts:
- Set the date, time and time zone.
- Enter your company name and an internal domain name (for example,
ad.yourcompany.com). - Create the network administrator account.
- Let the wizard set up Active Directory, DNS and the Essentials Experience roles. This takes 20–30 minutes and restarts the server.
Step 4: Activate
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- If the key wasn't entered during setup, run
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. - Run
slmgr /atoto activate, thenslmgr /dlvto confirm "Licensed".
Step 5: Connect Your Office PCs
On each client PC, open a browser and go to http://SERVERNAME/connect. Download the Connector software and follow the prompts. PCs then appear in the dashboard and are included in the nightly client backup.
